Greenbuild 2010 - CHICAGO
Greenbuild, the big convention and product expo for green design, will be back in Chicago next year. The dates are Nov. 10-12 and the location is the McCormick Place West building, one of the nation's largest LEED-certified structures. About 30,000 visitors are expected, though we don't know who the keynote speaker is yet.
Al "An Inconvenient Truth" Gore is keynoting this year's Greenbuild in Phoenix.
Among the featured programs--and one that will be new to Chicago--is the "Greenbuild residential summit," which focuses on green aspects of residential construction.
In addition to support from the City of Chicago (Sadhu Johnston, Mayor Daley’s right-hand man for the environment, will be back in a starring role), Greenbuild 2010 will also include a State of Illinois component (headed by Eric Heineman, Governor Pat Quinn’s sustainability guru), as well as an energy-related leg, courtesy of Commonwealth Edison (Val Jensen, VP of marketing and environmental programs).
Greenbuild made it first appearance in Chicago in 2007 (above). There
were some major registration problems at that convention, but
organizers told me Wednesday that they will avoid a repeat next time
around.

As Americans are becoming more environmentally conscious, more religious groups are looking to make their worship spaces sustainable. The efforts range from small country congregations using energy-efficient bulbs to megachurches complying with complex green-building codes.
By going green, most worship buildings can cut their energy costs by 30 percent, said Jerry Lawson, of the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star Congregations program. About 2,000 of the nearly 310,000 houses of worship in the U.S. participate in the EPA program.

As the recession grinds on, some consultants are finding an emerging outlet by updating older buildings from power hogs into green stewards. The trend is attracting a fresh round of eco-savvy tenants.
Chicago is home to two large projects, examples of advancing efforts to green up existing buildings. In early December, 172 buildings nationwide were certified under the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED for Existing Buildings Rating System, a program created in 2004. More than 2,000 other buildings are seeking to obtain such certification, according to the Washington, D.C.-based group.
